May Day Madness

A little bit of violence erupted in downtown Seattle tonight as police tried to keep the peace with the May Day protestors, eighteen arrests and eight officers injured. I don’t sympathize with this sort of protest.

Instead, I choose to celebrate this day which is special to me because it is the anniversary of my first day in Seattle, May 1st 1989. Back then, Seattle was a much smaller, less demonstrative place.

I remember driving along Fifth Avenue downtown under the monorail as a train whizzed above me, absolutely thrilled to be living in such a civilized city. Most of the time, I still feel the same.
